The Matrix 4 is a Reality! Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss & Lana Wachowski Returning

August 21, 2019

Time to take the red pill. While we’ve long thought that Warner Bros. would be rebooting The Matrix for a new generation, meaning, it would restart the seminal sci-fi franchise rather than carry on with the storyline that began with Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s game-changing 1999 film, we’re happy that that’s not the case. Variety reports that The Matrix 4 is the film Warner Bros. will be releasing, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity respectively, and Lana Wachowski will write and direct the fourth film.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich told Variety. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

The script is coming not only from Wachowski, but Aleksandar Hemon (Sense8) and novelist David Mitchell (Lana and Lilly Wachowski adapted his novel Cloud Atlas for the big screen back in 2012.)

Warner Bros. ultimately found a way to greenlight the project after a very strong summer for Keanu Reeves. He starred in the hugely popular John Wick 3 and was a fresh voice in Toy Story 4. Both were big hits. The immensely likable star is also enjoying a major mid-career renaissance. Warner Bros. got the script from Wachowski, which further drummed up excitement. Getting Carrie-Anne Moss back on board is also a huge coup, as her cool, lethal Trinity was one of the characters that made the original Matrix such a thrill ride.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski told Variety.”

If you recall what happened in The Matrix Revolutions (2003), you’ll remember that both Neo and Trinity died. Considering that The Matrix is a world completely conceived of by the Wachowskis, Lana Wachowski has the God-like powers to bring back whoever she wants. Now that we know she’s raising Neo and Trinity from the dead, here’s to hoping she’ll also bring back Laurene Fishburne as Morpheus.

The first Matrix turns 20 this year, so the timing for this news couldn’t be better.
