The Economic Contribution of the Audiovisual Industry in South Korea

On April 21, MPA Asia Pacific launched The Economic Contribution of the Audiovisual Industry in South Korea, 2025, produced by Oxford Economics. The report was warmly received by lawmakers and government ministries and marks the first all‑of‑industry economic contribution study for Korea since 2018. The MPA’s role in providing authoritative analysis on the scale and evolving dynamics of the screen sector continues to be well regarded by both government and industry.
The report assesses the total economic impact of the screen sector, including direct production activity, supply-chain impacts and induced consumer spending. The research found that South Korea’s film, television and streaming sector generated KRW 24.08 trillion (USD 17.1 billion) in GDP and supported 291,100 jobs in 2025.
The report was launched at the National Assembly in Seoul alongside policymakers and industry leaders. The event featured a video message from MPA Chairman & CEO Charles Rivkin, welcome remarks by MPA Asia‑Pacific President & MD Mila Venugopalan and Rep. Lim O-Kyeong, a key policymaker on culture, content and sports issues, a presentation on the findings of the report by MPA Korea Managing Director Bo Son, and a panel discussion with local industry stakeholders and academics. Rep. Lim O-Kyeong amplified her desire to partner with local and international industry stakeholders to grow and support the production and distribution of K-content.
In an interview with The Korea Herald, Mila Venugopalan highlighted South Korea’s film, TV and streaming sector as a global model for how consistent, evidence‑based policy and strong copyright protection can drive economic growth and cultural export.
